AFNIC To Relax Registration Rules?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
AFNIC, which runs the .fr registry, has published its Action Plan for 2010.

While the "old chestnut" of DNSSEC is on the agenda (no surprise there!), there's also reference to a change in the registration rules.

Under the current registration rules registrants need to supply an address in France.
The proposed change is intended to open up registration to all French nationals regardless of their place of residence.

So does this leave the door open for a wider change?

Are we likely to see non-French nationals being able to register .fr domains without having to "jump through hoops"?

The current situation is more than a little frustrating. If a non-French company or individual wants to register a .fr domain, regardless of their motives, the registry rules render the registration incredibly difficult. While other ccTLD registries may have restrictive rules, in most instances there are relatively "sane" ways to navigate them.

It's not clear from the document that has been published what the registry's exact plans are in this area, but any change and progress in this area should be welcomed.

According to the document the plan would need to be voted on by the board in November.

ICANN Blog en francais

ICANN Logo
In a multi-lingual and multicultural internet society it's nice to see that the ICANN blog is publishing content in languages other than English.

Prior to the meeting in San Juan there were a number of posts in Spanish and now there is French.

While this move should be welcomed the US-centric aspects of the organisation should not be ignored.

Domain Management White Paper

|
Businesses may rely on domain names to conduct their day to day work, but that does not mean that they really understand what they are using or how important they are.

Of course those of us in industry may feel tempted to either scoff at people's naivety or feel terribly frustrated with their ignorance, however neither action is particularly productive.

Loic Damilaville, however, has tried to take a more practical and positive approach by publishing a white paper on domain name management. The document was published a few months ago in French and has since been made available in English.

The document covers all aspects of domain name management and starts from the very basics ie. what is a domain name and why it is important to you, and then moves onto provide some very useful tips that business people may need.

Some of the highlights:
  • Keep domain contacts up to date - as Loic rightly points out this causes so many headaches!
  • Domain administrators should actually be aware of their responsibilities - in a lot of cases in my experience the person registering the domain has no real interest in it and won't pay attention to correspondence once the domain is "live"
He also goes into detail on how people can use domains, which is important, as many people still seem to think that domains are websites!

If you have a few minutes to spare it's a good read and if, like me, you're getting tired of having to explain "basic" domain related concepts then this could save you a lot of time and hassle.
