ICANN Mobile Site Incorporates Social Media Tools

|
icann sydney logoThe ICANN mobile site for the Sydney meeting (due to open officially next Monday) should be a useful resource for anyone attending the meeting in Sydney.
However the site has been expanded and now includes both photos (via Flickr) and tweets (from Twitter)

If you're interested in following what's going on or want to share your content, then use the tags "icann" or "icann sydney" in Flickr or simply "icann" in Twitter.

On a related note, there's also an ICANN "Twibe". More details here

DotMobi Wins Net Visionary Award

|
Last night the Irish Internet Association celebrated its annual awards ceremony in Dublin - the Net Visionaries.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Trey Harvin, dotMobi CEO, was shortlisted for the Mobile Internet Innovation award.
I'm delighted to report that Trey went home last night with the award!

Congratulations to all the dotMobi team!

Dotmobi Release Wordpress Mobile Pack

| | Comments (1)
mobi logoOne of the things that I love about the guys at dotMobi is their tireless work to promote the mobile internet.

Their latest move is the release of the Wordpress Mobile Pack which is probably the most comprehensive suite of tools to render a CMS powered site "mobile ready" (put another way, it makes mobifying your site dead easy).

So what is included?

Looking at the release notes it's pretty overwhelming:

    * Mobile switcher to detect mobile visitors and provide an appropriate experience
    * Base mobile theme for quick-and-easy XHTML-MP compliance
    * Extended mobile themes so you can unleash your mobile creativity
    * Transcoding and device adaptation to optimise the mobile experience
    * DeviceAtlas integration for world-class adaptation
    * Mobile admin panel for when posts can't wait
    * Mobile ad widget to make you some money (choose between admob or Google adsense)
    * Barcode widget to help users bookmark your blog

The only thing it doesn't do is write your content for you!

Of course this is only the first iteration, so expect to see even more features (and goodies) in future releases

Nice work dotMobi!

DotMobi CEO Shortlisted For Award

|
mobi logo
Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi, has been shortlisted for the Mobile Internet Innovation award in this year's Irish Internet Association Net Visionary awards.

DotMobi has been promoting their Instant Mobilizer service to website / domain owners to encourage them to make their websites "mobile friendly".

Public voting is currently open, so why not cast your vote?

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Dublin on May 21st 2009 as part of the Association's annual congress.

Xml.mobi Sells For $430

|
Short generic domains can be insanely expensive, so it was interesting to see how much xml.mobi would fetch at auction over on Sedo

The bidding heated up a bit in the last hour or so, but the domain went under the hammer for a mere $430, which is a lot lower than you might have expected.

dotMobi To Offer IDN In 2009

|
mobi logo
DotMobi will be launching IDNs in simplified Chinese during the second quarter of 2009.

IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names) allow domains to be registered (and accessed) using non-ASCII characters.

If you want to get a basic overview of IDNs check out the WikiPedia entry, or head over to the section on the  ICANN site.

DotMobi Extends Pricing Promotion

| | Comments (5)
mobi logo
While other domain registries seem only to happy to increase their prices this autumn it is refreshing to see that dotMobi won't.

DotMobi have been offering registrars promotional pricing for most of this year, although they were meant to be halting the promotion during the autumn.

They have now revealed that they will be continuing with their promotional pricing until the end of the year.

Of course there is little or no guarantee that any promotions offered by a registry will be passed down the chain ie. to resellers or direct registrants.

Narnia.mobi - WIPO Decision Doesn't Hold Any Surprises

| | Comments (2)
The Chronicles of Narnia

Image via Wikipedia

Irish and international media's interest was sparked in recent months by the dispute over the domain narnia.mobi

Now unless you've been living in a very dark cave far away from the rest of civilised society for the last fifty years, then you'd know that Narnia is the literary invention of CS Lewis. You might also know that Disney has made two films based on the first two books in the Narnia series, with more due to be made.

So what was the dispute about?

According to the registrant:

The Respondent asserts that the sole reason for registering the disputed domain name was to provide his son with an email address containing "Narnia" as a gift. According to the Respondent, his son is an enthusiastic fan of "The Chronicles of Narnia" books. The Respondent registered the disputed domain name shortly after the release of the first "Narnia" movie, at which time his son was nine years old. The Respondent alleges he decided to present his son with this gift on the event of his eleventh birthday on May 20, 2008, corresponding to the release of the second "Narnia" film in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland ("United Kingdom").

So the question I'd have to ask is why the respondent deemed it necessary to register someone else's trademark. If all they wanted was a domain "containing" Narnia surely they could have opted for something else?

You can read the full decision on the WIPO site.

While the decision was, in many respects, a forgone conclusion, there are some interesting points raised in the decision about what exactly constitutes "bad faith" and how the burden of proof might be distributed.

One and Two Character Domains? Dotmobi and dotcoop

| | Comments (2)
Short domains are more memorable.

You can't really argue with that.

However a lot of registries don't allow them for a variety of reasons.

The Isle of Man is one of the few exceptions that springs to mind, as they allow pretty much any length, but charge more for the shorter ones.

The Irish domain registry does not allow two letter domains, but will allow two character domains. (There is one two letter IE domain which predates the registry).

In the big bad world of gTLDs releasing the one and two letter domains that are still available comes up for discussion from time to time. Stephane has posted recently about what's being going on with .mobi and .coop.

The .coop registry has been given approval to release two character domains, while both .coop and .mobi have been informed that their requests regarding single character domains do not pose any issue and have been referred to the ICANN board.

I'm not sure how popular .coop's domains will prove, but I expect the .mobi ones will be very popular and are bound to fetch very high prices if they are released via auction.

In any case it's doubtful if mere mortals will be able to afford them! :)

DotMobi Premium Auction Postponed

|
mobi logo
As I've mentioned in the past, dotMobi has been running auctions to allocate some of its "premium" names.

There was quite a bit of controversy surrounding the last auction which seems to have left a bad taste in some people's mouths.

The next auction was originally scheduled to take place on January 23rd, but has now been postponed.

According to a post yesterday on the company's blog:

our goal has been to identify a way forward that is fairest to all and that best facilitates the development of high-quality content for mobile web users. After further review, we have been able to identify some cases where it may be possible to allocate registration tokens without an auction (and without substantial controversy). The remaining names will be included in a new auction.

The revenue from the auction of premium domains is used by the company to fund the promotion of the namespace to users, including the development of tools for web developers.

Hosting.mobi Sells for $101k!

The first of the dotmobi premium auctions finished earlier this evening, although the full sale results don't seem to be available as yet hosting.mobi is listed as having fetched $101,000!

DotMobi Premium Auction Now Live on Sedo

|
mobi logo
I mentioned the dotmobi premium auctions that are planned over the coming months.

The first of these started earlier today and there's already quite a bit of bidding activity.
At time of writing loans.mobi has received $30k in bids, with wifi.mobi getting $19k so far.

Head on over to place your bid! Mine wasn't quite big enough (though that's hardly surprising!)

Google Launches Mobile Ready Adsense

|
It was only inevitable that Google would eventually offer a mobile ready version of its adsense platform. It's been doing it to some degree with the parking companies for some time, although maybe not directly.

As one of the named investors in dotmobi this move is actually a bit late when you consider that there are already a number of other companies who were "first to market" and probably have gained an advantage with the mobile developer community.

In terms of the interface there's no big change. It's pretty much the same as any other adsense product with a choice of palettes etc.,

If anyone has a chance to play with it I'd love to hear how they get on

There's some very interesting names on the list, but any content provider would have to ensure that the content was compliant with the dotmobi guidelines.

The auction page on the dotmobi site goes into this in more detail:
In addition, dotMobi has further, minimal, requirements for the buyer:

- Domain to be registered by auction winner within 10 days of receiving authorization code
- Site to initially consist of a dotMobi-compliant parking page
- Best efforts to create, launch and operate a live web site with relevant content within six months. (For example, acupuncture.mobi should not display a site for car sales.)
- Fully compliant site with an http://ready.mobi score of at least 4/5.
(see the premium auction site for full details)

So if you think you can just grab some nice dotmobi domains and use them for a "normal" website you may want to rethink your plans!

I was talking to Caroline in DotMobi's Dublin office this afternoon about the upcoming auctions and she was very upbeat about their prospects. Of course with domain auctions prices could go any way - just have a look at the results from some of the more recent auctions held at Domain Rountable or TRAFFIC.

So how much could you pay for a .mobi domain?

The best gauge is past performance, and that is spread from a couple of thousand dollars to a couple of hundred thousand. The past two auctions of dotmobis yielded the following results:

Traffic October 2006

Flowers.mobi ($200,000)
Fun.mobi ($100,000)
Hot.mobi ($40,000)
Stockquotes.mobi ($27,000)
Party.mobi ($13,000)
Wow.mobi ($9,000)
Gossip.mobi ($5,000)
Laugh.mobi ($3,000)
Celebs.mobi ($2,250)

Traffic March 2007

 Models.mobi - $7,500
Eat.mobi - $6,700
Singles.mobi - $41,000
Casinos.mobi - $52,000
Cam.mobi - $10,500
Realestate.mobi - $85,000
Directions.mobi - $19,000
Pizza.mobi - $21,000
Loancalculator.mobi - $1,500
Airfare.mobi - $11,000
Areacodes.mobi – $5,890
Pics.mobi - $23,000
Creditscore.mobi - $6,500

You can already start placing bids, but the auction won't open for a couple of weeks.

I'll probably be bidding on a couple of the domains listed, as I could see some very interesting using for them

dotmobi makes changes in management team

|
mobi logo
Just got a press release from dotmobi to say that they've just appointed a new CEO:

DUBLIN, Ireland and WASHINGTON, DC - September 12, 2007 - dotMobi, the consortium behind the only Internet address created specifically for mobile phones, has appointed Trey Harvin, longtime Internet and technology veteran, as CEO of dotMobi and David Ryder as VP of Marketing and Sales. In their respective roles, Harvin and Ryder will be charged with building on the success of dotMobi to date and taking the company forward with more innovative products for expanding the use of the mobile web.

Over the past year, Dublin-based dotMobi has launched its developer portal and associated tools - dev.mobi, site.mobi and ready.mobi - and has also seen approximately 700,000 .mobi domains registered.

With more than three million indexed pages of dotMobi content currently available, the world's biggest brands including BMW, The Sun newspaper, Disney, Paramount, Maxim magazine, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Microsoft and Google have launched .mobi sites, prompting .mobi development in key industry sectors such as travel, media, real estate, automobiles and entertainment.

"With this strong foundation, dotMobi is entering a new and exciting growth phase," said Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi. "In the next two quarters we will focus on growing mobile services for the development community and the enterprise with the launch of key products such as the our device database and search services."

Neil Edwards, who was the founding CEO of dotMobi and who grew the company from a fledgling concern to a vital part of the mobile Web infrastructure, will pursue opportunities closer to his family in the United States.

Jerry Easom, Chairman of the dotMobi Board, said, "On behalf of the Board, I thank Neil for his strong efforts in bringing dotMobi to life. Over the past two years, he has worked closely with the 14 investor members of the Board to create a simple way for consumers around the world to find and access content on their mobile phones. His work has helped grow the global use of mobile Internet significantly. We are also happy to welcome Trey Harvin and David Ryder to the senior management team to continue the good work."

Harvin will assume responsibilities as CEO immediately, having worked closely with Edwards to ensure a smooth transition. Among his initial projects will be a launch of an open database service designed to assist developers in building mobile content and a new, leading-edge mobile content database.

Harvin, previously a senior executive and management consultant at several wireless and Internet start-up technology companies, served as Vice President of Business Operations at leading internet company VeriSign. He also was Vice President of Product Development at Network Solutions as well as Network Solutions' Chief of Staff.

Ryder has extensive mobile experience as VP Operations and Sales of the ESPN Mobile division as well as several senior management roles at British Telecom, specializing in Marketing, Product Development and Technology across fixed, mobile and Internet.

It will be very interesting to see if Edwards' replacement will have the same passion and drive that made Edwards such an interesting and charismatic character.

Neil Edwards Dispels Myths and Makes a Promise

|
mobi logo
I've written about .mobi quite a bit over the last few months.

There are a few reasons for this:
  • I've met most of the team and thought they were cool people
  • They're actually based in Ireland and employ Irish people (yes that is a bit of national pride you're seeing!)
  • They seem to have a vision and a mission
  • They're trying (and succeeding) to make the mobile web a reality
  • They've been following up on their promises
  • They dont' seem to have as many issues with cybersquatters etc.,
  • They seem to be much more engaged with end users via their blogs and other channels
In any case the most recent post by CEO Neil Edwards really caught my eye. In it he dispels some of the "popular myths" and rumours surrounding the TLD, but he also makes public what has to be one of the coolest things a TLD manager could offer:
In fact, dotMobi has a standing offer. If you ever buy a dotMobi name and have a problem building conent, contact us. We will either help you directly, provide you with a tool or connect you with firm who can help you.
Now that is cool!

Shaping a TLD - Policy and more

| | Comments (2)
mobi logo
Caroline Greer's latest article on the dotMobi blog caught my attention, as I was thinking about registry policies and development quite a bit over the last few days, especially in light of recent news concerning the IE namespace.

Dotmobi, in common with a lot of other registries, has an advisory group that is able to influence its development and policies. This may sound a bit sinister, but if you examine it more closely you'll find that the opposite is the case.

While dotmobi is very obviously aimed at the mobile web, other TLDs and ccTLDs are of benefit and interest to stakeholders from different backgrounds.
Nominet, for example, has a policy advisory board and actively gets involved with the steering list (a mailing list for members to discuss policy matters).
Unfortunately the IE ccTLD does not have any formal policy advisory group. In order for policy to develop and change it has to rely on its board, which does not appear to be in anyway representative of stakeholders.
In the case of dotmobi, for example, the advisory group has four levels of membership which vary in cost from 295 euro to a staggering 15 thousand euro!
Of course if the mobile web is of importance to your business it's probably a small price to play, though you won't see me lining up to join at that price!
