IDN Scaremongering - Mashable and Times Online Screw Up

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
IDNs might be a slightly "hot" topic at the moment following on from ICANN's launch of the IDN cctld program recently.

However, IDNs are NOT a new topic.

Far from it.

They've been around for quite some time.

Unfortunately neither The Times Online or Mashable seem to have done any homework. Considering the amount of content available on IDNs that has been researched and actually proven - you know, factual information, it's pretty amazing that not one, but two respected online publications manage to get something so completely wrong.

Andrew from Domain Name Wire explains very succinctly why both Mashable and The Times are wrong.

As anyone who actually bothers doing a bit of research into IDNs could tell you, the IDN projects have been discussed at length and from every imaginable angle.

Do the authors of those two articles honestly think that the DNS community hadn't thought about potential phishing problems?

Do they think we're all idiots?

It's not as if we ever have to deal with phishing or any other DNS related attacks is it?

We're just misinformed observers, like them, aren't we?

And here I was thinking that The Times was a quality publication ..

Oh well, back to the drawing board I guess.

DotMobi IDN To Launch October 29th

I mentioned that dotMobi were planning to launch IDNs some time ago, but now they've announced a launch date.

By the looks of things dotMobi are planning for a nice media coup, as the launch of the sunrise period for IDN coincides with the ICANN meeting in Asia on October 19th 2009 at 4am UTC.

Unlike other IDN launches, dotMobi are being very specific about the launch and are only launching Chinese IDN for the Chinese market.

To make matters more "interesting", the entire offering will only be available in a "bundle" which includes a wireless keyboard that supports the IDN character set.

There will be two phases to the launch, a sunrise from October 29th until November 28th and then "general registration".

DotMobi will be launching IDNs in simplified Chinese during the second quarter of 2009.

IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names) allow domains to be registered (and accessed) using non-ASCII characters.

If you want to get a basic overview of IDNs check out the WikiPedia entry, or head over to the section on the  ICANN site.

IEDR Boss Interviewed in Sunday Business Post

David Curtin, IEDR CEO, was interviewed during the week by Sunday Business Post's technology editor Adrian Weckler

The full interview is available online.

Some of the questions posed by Weckler revealed some of the more awkward and restrictive views of the registry, including its policy on censoring domain names.

However it is interesting to note that Curtin not only made public reference to setting up a policy advisory board, but also mentioned the registry's plans to introduce support for IDN's (finally!).

Some of the answers, however, are amusing.

Curtin seems to believe that people register larger volumes of domains in .com as they are afraid of "cybersquatting".

While this may be true of large corporates it is most definitely not the case with Irish SMEs. Most Irish SME users register theircompanyname.com and possibly theircompanyname.ie. They won't register derivatives or typos unless someone tells them to.

The fact that so many people still opt for a .com over a .ie cannot be explained away by referring to Curtin's favourite bogeyman dotCom (he's taken to referring to them as a competitor).

Basic fact:
IE domains cost at least two, if not three to four times, more to register than a .com.
The average cost of registering an IE domain is approximately 40 euro per annum, if you average the price across the largest vendors.
The average cost of registering a .com domain is approximately 8 euro.

The cost of registering a domain name is directly related to the level of automation possible. Since IEDR's systems still rely heavily on human intervention both at the registry and registrar (reseller) level real competition with doteu and dotcom is not a viable proposition at this juncture.

An average SME that does not conduct a large portion of its business online may want email and an online presence, but probably won't want to spend more on the domain than they have to.

The supposed added value of a dotIE is primarily of interest to large corporates. Smaller business is not as concerned with trademark issues as some people would like to make out.

If the registry wanted to seriously increase the number of IE registrations they need to invest some of their surplus in marketing, PR and possibly co-marketing with their stakeholders.

ICANN Going Multilingual?

|
ICANN Logo
On registering at the ICANN LA meeting all delegates are presented with a bag and tshirt.

This time round the tshirt is black and reflects what seems to be a possible theme for this meeting - multilingualism.

One of the issues that ICANN has been making efforts to address over the past few months is multilingualism. This meeting is meant to be having a number of sessions with support for Spanish and other languages.

Of course with IDN's test currently ongoing it's only natural that ICANN would try, at least, to make an effort to support other languages.

Of course there are plenty of technical and policy issues to be overcome before widespread adoption of IDN, but in order for the internet to be realistically representative of its entire userbase, then some level of support for IDN is  must.
