Afilias, which runs .info and provides registry services to a lot of other domains, has acquired the .mobi registry operator - mTLD Ltd.
The acquisition was officially announced on February 11th 2010, with both Afilias and mTLD releasing press releases etc., as well as a message to pass on to any registrants who might be concerned by the acquisition.
Is this good news or bad news?
I'd suspect that it's good news. It's certainly not bad!
It will be interesting to see what, if any, changes Afilias will bring to the .mobi namespace.
You can read the official announcement here

I mentioned that dotMobi were planning to launch IDNs some time ago, but now they've announced a launch date.
By the looks of things dotMobi are planning for a nice media coup, as the launch of the sunrise period for IDN coincides with the ICANN meeting in Asia on October 19th 2009 at 4am UTC.
Unlike other IDN launches, dotMobi are being very specific about the launch and are only launching Chinese IDN for the Chinese market.
To make matters more "interesting", the entire offering will only be available in a "bundle" which includes a wireless keyboard that supports the IDN character set.
There will be two phases to the launch, a sunrise from October 29th until November 28th and then "general registration".

Last night the Irish Internet Association celebrated its annual awards ceremony in Dublin - the Net Visionaries.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Trey Harvin, dotMobi CEO, was shortlisted for the Mobile Internet Innovation award.
I'm delighted to report that Trey went home last night with the award!
Congratulations to all the dotMobi team!

One of the things that I love about the guys at dotMobi is their tireless work to promote the mobile internet.Their latest move is the release of the Wordpress Mobile Pack which is probably the most comprehensive suite of tools to render a CMS powered site "mobile ready" (put another way, it makes mobifying your site dead easy).
So what is included?
Looking at the release notes it's pretty overwhelming:
* Mobile switcher to detect mobile visitors and provide an appropriate experience
* Base mobile theme for quick-and-easy XHTML-MP compliance
* Extended mobile themes so you can unleash your mobile creativity
* Transcoding and device adaptation to optimise the mobile experience
* DeviceAtlas integration for world-class adaptation
* Mobile admin panel for when posts can't wait
* Mobile ad widget to make you some money (choose between admob or Google adsense)
* Barcode widget to help users bookmark your blog
The only thing it doesn't do is write your content for you!
Of course this is only the first iteration, so expect to see even more features (and goodies) in future releases
Nice work dotMobi!
Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi, has been shortlisted for the Mobile Internet Innovation award in this year's Irish Internet Association Net Visionary awards.
DotMobi has been promoting their Instant Mobilizer service to website / domain owners to encourage them to make their websites "mobile friendly".
Public voting is currently open, so why not cast your vote?
The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Dublin on May 21st 2009 as part of the Association's annual congress.

ICANN announced their new mobile site earlier today just in time for the upcoming public meeting in Mexico city.
The new ICANN mobile site which has been setup with the assistance of dotMobi, contains information of relevance to delegates attending the public meeting in Mexico.
I know from previous ICANN meetings that I can never remember when / where things were on, but I always have my phone with me!
Handy!

DotMobi will be launching IDNs in simplified Chinese during the second quarter of 2009.
IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names) allow domains to be registered (and accessed) using non-ASCII characters.
If you want to get a basic overview of IDNs check out the WikiPedia entry, or head over to the section on the ICANN site.

John McCormac has been collecting and processing statistics on domain registrations and hosting for as long as I can remember. He is probably best known for Hackwatch and WhoisIreland, which produces monthly reports for the Irish hosting and domain industry.
John's latest project has been in development for several months and offers an alternative to some of the existing domain statistics sites already on the market.
What makes it different is that HosterStats cares about ccTLD data.
Sites like WebHosting.info and DomainTools all but ignore ccTLD data and give a rather skewed perspective of non-US based providers.
With Hosterstats you can easily check the DNS history on any .com/.net/org/info/mobi/eu/asia/co.uk or .ie domain name.
While the site isn't the prettiest at present it is incredibly functional and nice and fast to load, so you get the information that you want quickly and easily.
It will be interesting to see what John plans on adding in terms of features in the coming weeks and months.

While other domain registries seem only to happy to increase their prices this autumn it is refreshing to see that dotMobi won't.
DotMobi have been offering registrars promotional pricing for most of this year, although they were meant to be halting the promotion during the autumn.
They have now revealed that they will be continuing with their promotional pricing until the end of the year.
Of course there is little or no guarantee that any promotions offered by a registry will be passed down the chain ie. to resellers or direct registrants.

Short domains are more memorable.
You can't really argue with that.
However a lot of registries don't allow them for a variety of reasons.
The Isle of Man is one of the few exceptions that springs to mind, as they allow pretty much any length, but charge more for the shorter ones.
The Irish domain registry does not allow two letter domains, but will allow two character domains. (There is one two letter IE domain which predates the registry).
In the big bad world of gTLDs releasing the one and two letter domains that are still available comes up for discussion from time to time. Stephane has posted recently about what's being going on with .mobi and .coop.
The .coop registry has been given approval to release two character domains, while both .coop and .mobi have been informed that their requests regarding single character domains do not pose any issue and have been referred to the ICANN board.
I'm not sure how popular .coop's domains will prove, but I expect the .mobi ones will be very popular and are bound to fetch very high prices if they are released via auction.
In any case it's doubtful if mere mortals will be able to afford them! :)
